The Enabling Environment
At Barrow Hedges, we create a high-quality, engaging environment that supports and extends each child’s learning and development.
Our indoor and outdoor spaces are carefully planned to provide rich opportunities across all areas of learning. Children are encouraged to explore, play and follow their interests, helping them to become deeply engaged and motivated learners.
The indoor and outdoor environments complement each other, offering different experiences that support a wide range of learning. Indoors provides calm, focused spaces for activities that develop concentration and use of smaller resources, while outdoors offers opportunities for active, physical and exploratory play.
Our environment is designed to promote independence, curiosity and confidence. Children can access resources easily, make choices about their learning and develop their own ideas through play.
Through thoughtful organisation and high-quality interactions, we ensure that the environment supports all children to feel secure, engaged and ready to learn.

Outdoors provides opportunities for more vigorous and active play.

At Barrow Hedges, children are encouraged to take the lead in their learning, with adults supporting and extending their ideas through thoughtful interaction.
Our environment is organised in a workshop-style approach, where resources are always available and accessible. This allows children to make choices, follow their interests and develop independence in their learning.
Each area is carefully planned and well resourced, with spaces kept clear, inviting and ready for learning at the start of each day.
We enhance provision to reflect children’s interests and to build on taught learning, ensuring children remain motivated, curious and eager to explore new experiences.
Resources are clearly labelled and organised so that children can use them independently and learn to take responsibility for their environment.
Our indoor environment provides calm, purposeful spaces where children can concentrate, explore and engage in activities that support deeper thinking and the development of key skills.

Promoting Learning Through Display
Displays are thoughtfully planned to reflect the learning taking place within each area of the classroom.
They showcase children’s experiences across each theme, including both adult-led and child-initiated learning. Photographs, children’s work and examples of creativity help to tell the story of learning and celebrate progress.
Displays are kept consistent over time so that the classroom becomes a familiar and supportive space, helping children to revisit, remember and build on their learning
