Gymnastics, Dance and YogaIn this section...
In accordance with the National Curriculum guidelines our aims are to develop body-awareness, physical coordination, agility and a wide variety of skills, which can be applied to small or large indoor apparatus, floor work and games.
Our gymnastic scheme is a combination of floor and apparatus work, enabling the children to develop key fundamental skills.
Our dance curriculum is a combination of taught programmes and the expression of feelings through movement. Our dance programme is cross-curricular and has links with history, geography, Religious Education and English.
Most recently, Year 6 children have participated in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ lessons, where the children have learnt a range of traditional ballroom dances, including the Waltz, Tango, American Smooth, Charleston, Jive and the Samba.
OFSTED February 2015 commented – ‘In a physical education lesson, the expertise of the specialist dance instructor helped pupils to learn the basic steps of the tango.’
In addition to gymnastics and dance, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 participate in a 10 weeks yoga programme. The programme is delivered by a professional yoga instructor. Exercises aim to easy learning and memory retention, as well as encouraging relaxation and improving concentration.
Yoga at Barrow Hedges takes place in Physical Education lessons and develops the strengthening of muscles, flexibility and promotes an active, healthy life style.
