What is School Council?
School Council is a place where representatives from each class discuss issues and make decisions which will help everybody in school. It is a forum where pupils and teachers can work together to bring about positive changes to Barrow Hedges School.
What do School Councillors do?
School Councillors are elected by the pupils in their class to:
Our school council meets around every 6 weeks, and includes representatives from every year group, from 1 to 6. Younger members of the council are buddied up with older children.
What kind of things does School Council discuss?
School Council discusses a wide range of issues; issues we have debated before include how we can improve lunchtimes, healthy eating in school, how we can save energy in school and how we can encourage walking to school rather than taking a car. Currently, School Council is discussing how we can set up a School Council newspaper and also a School Council page on the MLE.
School Council Newspaper - The Barrow Hedges Times
During the Spring term, members of School Council, along with guest writers from Year 6, have produced the first edition of our new school newspaper - the ‘Barrow Hedges Times’. The paper includes articles on a wide range of topics, from Creativity Week to school trips, from sports events to lunchtime games. There are also a whole range of fun activities included in the paper, such as Sudoku, a crossword, brain teasers, recipes, jokes, horoscopes and many, many more. We have all worked really hard on the paper, and we hope you enjoy reading it. School Council would welcome your feedback about the ‘Barrow Hedges Times’, including which parts you particularly liked, and any suggestions for things you would like to see included in the next issue. If you have any comments, pop them into the suggestion box in your classroom, or speak to your School Councillor. Happy reading!
Thank you to everyone for all your positive feedback about our first issue! During the Summer term we have produced our second issue of the Barrow Hedges Times - we hope you enjoy it as much as the first!
